The most common design for double mats is to make the inner mats, which are close to diploma or artworks smaller in order to stress the content of frames.

For special cases, such as a piece with special shape in the frame, you should determine the width according to the needs of the contents. For example, if you are framing a very long piece, you may consider a mat which is a little bit wider at the bottom than at the top to give a feeling of providing enough support for the long piece.

When you browse the various diploma frames, you may notice that usually there are two kinds of backing board – foamcore or corrugated. The reason why frame suppliers offer two kinds is not because they think it is nice to provide more choices or they are simply feeling whimsical. It is always the eternal question in the design of diploma frames.

Price is the major difference between the two rivals. foamcore usually has higher price since it has been buffered to slow down the deterioration which is caused by acid or something else. Therefore, foamcore is well worth the price if you think the protection and preservation of your diploma is one of the highest priorities. Thus foamcore is recommended for important certificates and other valuable documents. In addition, since most of foamcore has white or light color, it matches items like diplomas or certificates better than dark brown corrugated backing, because documents may have kind of translucence.

But every coin has two sides, corrugated backing is great for something that is not so precious, such as photograph, or some licenses which is updated every year. In business, the perfect compliment to an item as a poster is corrugated backing since poster paper is heavy enough to avoid any translucence. Also because of its lower price, corrugated backing is a good choice if you are looking to keep the costs low.
